CHEMISTRY at St Peter's Catholic School

Course description

An A level in Chemistry is recognised by universities as beingvery academic and is an essential subject for careers inmedicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, chemical engineering,forensic science, radiography to name but a few. You willdevelop an enjoyment of, and an interest in chemistryand its applications in an ever developing society. You willbe given an insight on how new materials are developedand their significance to industry and society as a whole.Chemistry partners well with Biology or Mathematics. Unit 1: Foundation Chemistry – Atomic structure, periodicityand organic chemistryUnit 2: Chemistry in Action – Kinetics, alkenes and analyticaltechniquesUnit 3: Investigative & Practical Skills in AS Chemistry

Entry requirements

In order to study AS/A2 chemistry we require you have at least a B grade in Additional Science or a B in chemistry if you are studying Triple Science. You will also need to have at least a grade C in mathematics. Students studying chemistry need to be able to workindependently, research a topic and be able to discuss their findings within the class. They need to be able to make links between different topics studied and apply their knowledgeto new situations. You are also assessed on your practical skills which require dexterity, teamwork and an eye for detail.
