Extended Project Qualification - Extended Pathway at Furze Platt Senior School

Course description

An Extended Pathway Subject - The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an opportunity to undertake a project in a subject of their choosing.  The EPQ is a level 3 "free standing" qualification.

The qualification comes with the point score equivalent to half an A Level.  The EPQ provides an opportunity to develop research skills, build upon independent learning, construct an academic dissertation and deliver an effective presentation.  Skills much sought after at both university and employment.

An EPQ could be a design, a report from an investigation, a dissertation, an artefact or a performance.

The AQA EPQ offers opportunities for students to:

•      Develop and improve their own learning and performance as critical, reflective and independent students

•      Develop and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills

•      Extend their planning, research, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills

•      Develop and apply skills creatively, demonstrating initiative and enterprise

•      Use their learning experiences to support their aspirations for further study and/or career development

•      Transfer skills developed as part of their project to other areas of study

Future opportunities

Why undertake an EPQ?

The skills learned during the process of the project are valued highly by universities and employers.  Here are just a few advocates:

Oxford University - "The EPQ will however be a good indicator of your ability to conduct independent research and also undertake an extended piece of writing".

Leeds University - "In some cases admissions tutors may wish to make an alternative offer to applicants, one of which involves successful completion of the EPQ (eg AAA at A level or AAB plus the Extended project)

University of Glasgow - "The University very much values the EPQ and its role in preparing students for a successful higher education experience".

Daily Mail - "University Tie Breaker"
