French AS/A Level at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College

Course description

In the first year you will study topics which include modern society and the cultural heritage of French speaking countries. You will also study in depth the work of a French filmmaker.

Course content

Independent listening and reading programmes are an integral part of the course, lessons are conducted in the foreign language as far as possible and make use  of authentic French material.

Entry requirements

Students should have a minimum of a Grade B in  French at GCSE



Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing 1.45 hour exam

Paper 2 Writing - 1 essay 1.30 hour exam

Paper 3 Speaking 12 - 14 minute exam


Paper 1 Listening, reading and writing 2.30 hour exam

Paper 2 Writing - 2 essays 2 hour exam

Paper 3 Speaking 21 - 23 minute exam

Future opportunities

Most universities offer students the opportunity to study French alone, but also alongside a vanety of subjects, such as law, business, linguistics or science. A modem language is also increasingly vital for employment, with major companies reporting a shortage of bilingual applicants.
