Level 2 Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair at Bournville College

Course description

This qualification is for school and college leavers who wish to join the automotive industry and for individuals (who are not employed in the industry) who want the opportunity to develop occupational knowledge and carry out practical tasks.
This qualification forms the knowledge component (technical certificate) of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for Motorcycle). When an apprentice has achieved a Level 2 Apprenticeship, they can then choose to broaden their education and training in other ways from this firm base. This learning programme qualification is based upon IMI Sector Skills Council's National Occupational Standards for Maintenance and Repair - Motorcycle route.

Course content

Some of the subjects you will study include:
Tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems fault diagnosis and routine maintenance: tyre wear patterns that indicate faults in other systems, types and routine maintenance for wheel bearings, faults on braking and suspension systems, operating principles and routine maintenance, motorcycle steering angles, rake, trail, fork offset and yoke offset
Engine fault diagnosis and routine maintenance: faults for spark ignition and diesel engines, mechanical, cooling air and liquid, air filtration systems, adjustment methods for fuel injected and carburettor systems, operation and common faults for electronic and conventional ignition systems
Transmission fault diagnosis and routine maintenance: common faults in final drives and drive shaft systems, belts, chains, operating principles and routine maintenance for automatic and manual transmission, CVT and types of clutch systems
Electrical and electronic systems fault diagnosis and routine maintenance: common faults and testing methods for battery charging, starting, and auxiliary systems, engine management operation testing and fault diagnostics
Where possible work experience opportunities will be arranged and you will have the opportunity to work on a group project.

Entry requirements

You will need 3 GCSEs at grades C and above including Maths and English or successful completion of IMI Level 1 with Functional Skills in English and Maths and a personal and social development qualification.

Assessment

Through coursework, practical assessments and online tests.

Future opportunities

An Apprenticeship or progress onto a full-time Level 3 Diploma (Motorcycle).
