Music Level 3 - AS Level/A Level at Exeter College

Course description

This course will lead to an understanding of the techniques of composition and performance and give a historical perspective of music styles.

Course content

AS Level: There are three parts to the course:

  • Performing
  • Composing
  • Listening and understanding

A Level: the AS components are studied to a higher level.

All AS and A Level students are expected to participate in music enrichment activities. Students must also be in receipt of private orExeter College Music Academy individual instrumental tuition. Instrument tuition is available through the Exeter College Music Academy.

Entry requirements

You need at least five GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language and maths) and three GCSEs at grade D or above, plus you must be able to read standard music notation confidently and be familiar with treble and bass clefs. You should have Grade 3 theory or have an understanding of theory at this level. You should be at least Grade 5 standard on an instrument even if you have not taken a performance exam. Previous participation in music ensembles and GCSE Music would be an advantage.


You will be assessed by a combination of coursework and end of year examinations, including a performance recital.


Future opportunities

You could go on to a higher education course. This A Level will also provide a suitable background for work in areas such as performance, composition, music teaching and music therapy.
