Year one:

  • measurements and their errors
  • particles and radiation
  • waves
  • mechanics and energy
  • electricity

Year two:

  • further mechanics and thermal physics
  • fields
  • nuclear physics

Plus one option from the following:

  • astrophysics
  • medical physics
  • engineering physics
  • turning points in physics
  • electronics

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above including:

  • English language
  • grade B or above in physics, or in both sections of Double Award Science
  • grade B or above in maths


  • two written examinations on the theoretical topics worth 80%
  • coursework which will include a visit and a practical experiment worth 20%

FREE to UK/EU under 19s not in employment

Future opportunities

You can go on to higher education to study a broad range of science and engineering degrees including physics, astrophysics, medical physics, electronic/electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Physics is also valued in medicine and dentistry degrees. Alternatively, you can seek employment in research, engineering or the armed forces.
