Photography A-Level at Rooks Heath High School

Course description

Photography touches every part of our life today and yet it is one of the most under-rated subjects due to its accessibility in our current digital world dominated by Facebook, Instagram and social media. Photography is one of the few subjects that can lead to a prosperous and rewarding career with only the basic foundation skills and yet it is sometimes regarded as a lesser subject.

At Rooks Heath, Photography is a very popular subject and we do our best to instil its potential as a career and as further education. It is taught to a very high standard. Students are taught camera techniques, digital and silver-base darkroom skills as well as visual literacy including contextual analysis. We also explore the wide ranging applications of Photography such as still life, portraiture, architectural and abstract, and provide students with key skills. We use a variety of teaching styles to equip the students for further education and/or a career in the visual technology and media world where discipline and perseverance are essential.

We offer Bridging course in Year 9, GCSE in Year 10 and Year 11, and A’ Level. The courses are delivered in small groups of 10-12, through a series of workshops, seminars, projects, trips to locations and galleries. At A’ Levels, a trip to Paris or other European cities is organised every other year.
