Course description

WHY CHOOSE ICT?

The impact of ICT on society is enormous and, as the percentage of businesses and households that utilise computer-based technologies continues to grow, so does the need for individuals who can competently use and manipulate these new systems. ICT lays the foundation for further study in any topic area, developing students to become good problem solvers and communicators.

Course content

CONTENT - Advanced Subsidiary Level

A written paper of two sections, A and B, presented in a question and answer booklet. Thereare no optional questions. Quality of Written Communication is assessed in two questions.

Candidates will be required to prepare a spreadsheet on a specific topic, defined by WJEC, in advance of the written paper. Hard copies of the spreadsheet are taken into the examination and used to answer questions. - Candidates undertake DTP and multimedia tasks, presenting the outcome for internalassessment and moderation by WJEC.

Entry requirements

AS Level

  • Entry onto AS courses is conditional on you achieving at least five B grades at GCSE Level which must include the subjects you intend to study
  • If you are starting a new subject at AS Level such as Psychology or Film Studies you must achieve a B grade in a related subject at GCSE Level such as Science or English
  • All students must also achieve at least a C grade in Mathematics and English Language

Assessment

ASSESSMENTIT1: 30 % 2 hours 15 minutes Written Paper 80 marks.

IT2: 20% Internal Assessment 80 marks

WHAT CAN I DO WITH ICT?

In today's workplace, those with knowledge and skills in ICT have the opportunity to pursue new and exciting careers and to be instrumental in the conception of computer systems that increasingly shape work and leisure activities. It is hard to think of any course in higher education or any career in which one is not likely to come into contact with computers and information systems.

WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?

There are no formal requirements and it is not necessary to have any prior qualifications in ICT, however, GCSE Maths and ICT grades A - B are useful starting points. You should be prepared for new ideas and be prepared to practise practical skills in a variety of applications software.
