Course content

AIMS OF THE COURSE:

This course is generally a 'hands-on course' that aims to improve the practical and theoretical knowledge of Information and Communication Technology. The general aims of the course include:

To introduce problem solving skills though practical application of information and

communication technology.

The ability to analyse, design and evaluate suitable solutions to a variety of information

technology problems.

Interpersonal skills necessary for communication with others using ICT as a medium.

An awareness of the role of information and communication technology in the management

and dissemination of information

An awareness of the economic, social and ethical implications of the use of information and

communication technology.

The ability to present information and technical documents to professional standards

The ability to use advanced features of a range of software and hardware.

The ability to install and configure computer hardware and software

Entry requirements

ICT C

5 A to C grades including Maths & English

If students have not sat GCSE ICT they may still be considered

Unit 1: The Information Age - Portfolio

Unit 2: The Digital Economy - Portfolio

Unit 3: The Knowledge Worker - External Exam

GCE Advanced Subsidiary Double Award

Units: 1 -3 and

Unit 4: System Design & Installation - Portfolio

Unit 5: Web Development - Portfolio

Unit 6: Technical Support - Portfolio

GCE Advanced Single Award

Units: 1-3 and

Unit 7: Using Database Software - External Exam

Unit 8: Managing ICT Projects - Portfolio

+ choice of Unit 10 using multimedia software.

Unit 11: Using spreadsheet software +

Unit 12: Customising Applications

GCE Advanced Level Double Award

Units:1- 8: and

Unit: 9: Communications and Networks - External Exam

+ choice of 3 Units from Unit 10: using multimedia software, Unit 11: Using Spreadsheet Software

Unit 12: Customising Applications

Unit:13 Web Management

Unit:14 Programming

The final selection of Optional Units is made at the beginning of the Academic Year

This course is particularly suited to students wishing to continue their studies in Information and Communication Technology or gain future employment in this area. In today's high-tech world it is difficult to find an area of study or employment where ICT skills are not highly sought after.
