Career & Personal Development - Independence and Personal Development at Bournville College

Course description

This is a pre-vocational course for school leavers (16-18). The majority of students have Moderate Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities sometimes including Emotional/Behavioural Difficulties too. This programme is designed to support students and enable them to make informed choices about future careers, while developing skills in Maths, English and ICT. The small teaching groups encourage development of confidence, positive social behaviours and self-esteem.

Course content

Students study
Entry Level 2 Certificate in Personal and Social Development
Entry Level 3 or Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development
Entry Level Certificate in Personal Progress
Functional Skills, maths and ICT

Vocational options include
Catering and Hospitality
Hair & Beauty
Health & Social Care
Independent Living Skills
Motor Vehicle
Sport and Fitness

All students have a personal tutor, an Individual Learning Plan and a weekly tutorial to monitor progress and discuss career choices.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.  Entry is by interview and a satisfactory reference from school. Applicants will have to do an assessment using the computer for English and maths. It is useful if prior to interview or at interview, applicants can bring an EHCP or a copy of a Statement of Special Educational Need.


Assessment is by portfolio building at Entry Level and by tutor observation of skills developed.

Future opportunities

Students may progress to employment or onto other college courses on mainstream or within Supported Learning, such as Life Skills.
