English Language AQA AS Level (Linear) at Poynton High School

Course description

A level English Language will enable students to build on the skills they have developed at GCSE, by engaging creatively and critically with a wide range of texts and discourses.
During your AS level studies you will study two texts linked by a topic or theme and be required to analyse each text individually and also draw comparison between both texts. Unit 2 will require you to write discursive essays on language diversity and complete a directed writing task on attitudes to language.

Course content

Learning Method:
A combination of taught lessons, independent learning and personal research. This specification is designed to foster learners’ independence as they explore English language in a variety of contexts. It provides learners with opportunities to develop a wide and deep knowledge of the systems of the English language and of issues relating to language and its uses. Throughout this course learners are presented with opportunities to develop their own creativity, both in the ways they think about language and in the ways they develop expertise in using spoken and written language to communicate in different ways.
The course introduces students to a variety of assessment styles, such as data analysis, discursive essays, directed writing, original writing and research-based investigative writing, allows them to develop a wide range of skills. These include critical reading, data analysis, evaluation, the ability to develop and sustain arguments and a number of different writing skills which are invaluable for both further study and future employment.

Entry requirements

  • 5 grade Cs or above at GCSE level, including a C grade pass in GCSE English Language


Unit 1 Language and the Individual Written Exam 1hour 30 minutes 50% of AS level
Unit 2 Language Varieties Written Exam 1hour 30 minutes 50% of AS level.
