Maths A-Level at Chase High School

Course description

We’ll expect you to have studied Maths at GCSE level, and to be eager to develop not only your numeracy but also your powers of problem solving, logic, creativity and analytical thought.

Course content

A Level Maths is one of the most versatile and valuable courses you can study. Use of arithmetic and the display of information by means of graphs are everyday essentials. Equally, advanced mathematics underpins our modern lives, from the error-correcting codes in computers, or the statistics that allow analysis of illnesses and treatments, to the differential equations behind space exploration.

At AS level, you’ll study three units:

  • Unit 1 – Core skills including algebra, co-ordinate geometry and curve sketching
  • Unit 2 – Core skills including calculus, logarithms, and trigonometry and number series
  • Unit 3 – Statistics 1 – when you study statistics, you’ll learn how to analyse and summarise numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions about it. You’ll extend your experience of probability problems using the new techniques learnt in the pure maths units

The A2 course also consists of three units:

  • Unit 4 – Core skills continued
  • Unit 5 – Core skills continued
  • Unit 6 – Decision 1

Entry requirements

5 x GCSEs at Grades A*-C, including English and Maths or an equivalent Level 2 BTEC, with GCSE English and Maths
