Computer Science at Brimsham Green School

Course description

Computer Science is a practical subject where you can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real-world systems. It is an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement, looking at the natural world through a digital prism.
The Computer Science qualification will develop your skills in computational thinking, helping you to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence.
You will learn about the characteristics of contemporary computer systems architecture, software and its development, types of programming languages, data types, representation and structures, exchanging data and web technologies, algorithms, using Boolean algebra and legal, moral and ethical issues.
You will gain an appreciation of elements of computational thinking through the use of programming and problem solving, pattern recognition, abstraction and decomposition and algorithm design and efficiency.

Course content

Computer Systems

Examination: Mix of question types: short-answer, longanswer and levels of response mark-schemetype questions.

Algorithms and Programming

Examination: Section A Traditional questions concerning computational thinking Section B Scenario/task which will involve problem solving.

Programming Project

Coursework: You will need to analyse a problem, design a solution, implement the solution and give a thorough evaluation.

Future opportunities

The concepts that lie at the heart of this Computer Science qualification will be the best preparation if you want to go on to study Computer Science at a higher level at university, but will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills.
