Motor Vehicle Studies Level 1 Diploma at Carlisle College

Course description

This programme provides you with many of the skills required by the motor vehicle industry. Successful students will be able to seek employment with a local garage or progress on to a motor vehicle mechanics or technician course. It is endorsed by the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) the industry's leading professional organisation.

Course content

The course consists of a combination of units: 

  • Motor vehicle servicing and inspection.
  • Basic engineering skills.
  • Information technology.
  • Health and safety Motor vehicle systems (engines, suspension, steering, transmission, electrical, etc.

As part of your programme of study, there is an expectation that you undertake a timetabled work placement or experience block of learning, this is designed to enable you to gain experience of the industry .

Entry requirements

GCSE profile of grades D-G or equivalent. At least 16 years of age, with a genuine interest of the Motor Industry.


Assessment will be by the completion of written knowledge assessments and assignments, alongside a portfolio of practical assessment evidence which will be assessed formally in the Motor Vehicle workshops.

Future opportunities

Completion of this Level 1 programme will enable you to continue your studies and progress onto a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Qualification, subject to successfully completing a progression assessment exam.
