Physics A Level at WQE

Course description

The syllabus for this course is designed to follow on from GCSE Science course.
 
The A-level specification includes core Physics topics:
• Mechanics
• Materials
• Waves
• Particles
• Quantum Phenomena
• Electricity
• Fields
• Nuclear Physics
• Thermal Physics
• Astrophysics
Wherever possible the approach to these topics is practical.

There is also an option to study one of the following topics in the second year –Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Turning Points or Electronics. Wherever possible the approach to these topics is practical.

Entry requirements

In addition to the standard College entry requirements, this course requires students to have achieved grade 66 or above in GCSE Combined Science (Higher Tier) or a minimum of 655 in the separate sciences which should normally include grade 6 or above in Physics. Grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics and grade 5 or above in English Language is also required.

Assessment

The A-level will be examined in the summer of the second year. Exams will cover all of the two years’ work. There will be practical assessment which leads to a Practical Endorsement of competency in Physics practical work.
