Painting and Decorating - Apprenticeship in Painting & Decorating - NVQ Level 2 at Calderdale College

Course description

The Apprenticeship in Painting & Decorating is for those learners who are interested in Painting & Decorating as a career. The majority of the training will be done in the workplace. The types of employers will range from small family run businesses to larger enterprises. Level 2 learners will work under close supervision at work and will be initially involved in learning the basics of building.

Course content

As an Apprentice bricklayer your job role will include setting out and building basic structures and assisting experienced builders on site. As you progress, you will carry out more complex tasks; be involved in planning your own work as well as the work of others . You will attend College one day a week to complete your Technical Certificate and Functional Skills elements of the programme. Your work based assessments will take place on site where you will gather evidence towards your NVQ portfolio.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs or equivalent.  All applicants will be interviewed and assessed for suitability by a Training Officer. Applicants will be expected to be in relevant employment with the support of an employer who can offer work that supports NVQ completion; however, those without an employer will be given job seeking assistance by the Training Officer.


Assessment takes place in the college workshops and out on site by a qualified assessor.

Future opportunities

On completion of your Apprenticeship you can progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship programme before moving in to the Construction industry.  Employment opportunities include self-employment as well as working for small and large companies.
