Art and Design (Photography), Level 3 Extended Diploma at Abingdon and Witney College

Course description

You will learn both traditional and cutting-edge techniques and explore a wide variety of different genres within photography including fashion, portraiture, advertising, experimental, location, fine art and documentary to help you decide your future career direction. This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop skills that you will need within the industry and students work on exciting project briefs that are both experimental and industry related. You will learn how to use the latest digital technologies in our brand new studios and industry-standard mac suites. The course will allow you to develop a diverse portfolio of imagery ready for you to take to a job, apprenticeship or a University interview to continue your studies at Degree level. The course will provide the opportunity to experiment with a variety of different cameras and lighting techniques and a variety of optional modules will also allow for students to experiment with film making and production. You will also develop your contextual knowledge by exploring a wide range of contemporary and historical photographers, informing your own work. Tutors with a wealth of industry experience will support you in developing your creative thinking and push the boundaries of your own learning. Dedication, hard work and motivation are essential to succeed on this new, exciting and dynamic programme. Assessment Methods: Assessment is on-going and coursework based. There are no exams within the programme. Over the two year course you will study 18 units and work may be re-submitted once in order to improve your grades. During the second year, students embark on a self-directed final major project where they set their own theme and develop independence. Learners will receive regular feedback and assessment on project work and are awarded either Pass, Merit, Distinction for each unit. The full qualification is the equivalent to three A Levels.


 

Entry requirements

You will need to have 5 qualifications from Functional Skills Level 2 and GCSEs at grade C or above (with one of these being an Art & Design related subject at grade B or above) OR Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design, Media, Creative Technologies, IT or Backstage Production at Merit or above. You will also be required to provide a written personal statement, a positive reference and to attend a formal interview with a traditional or digital portfolio of visual work.
