Physics A level at Oaks Park High School

Course description

This specification is designed to encourage candidates to: 
  • progress smoothly from previous GCSE studies in physics
  • develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of physics
  • gain hands-on practical skills and data analysis skills
  • appreciate how science works and its relevance beyond the laboratory 
  • see how physics links to other sciences and how the subject underpins important technologies
  • study optional topics so they can specialise in topics that generate interest. 
Teaching will be through means of teacher-led material, discussion, student presentation and practical work. Homework will regularly consist of mathematical questions. Students will need to complete a significant amount of independent reading and research, in order to ensure that they understand and learn the material covered effectively, and to widen their knowledge. 
 
To enhance learning and 'Physics' experience, as trip to visit CERN in Geneva also takes place. 
 
Physics combines well with maths and other sciences, such as chemistry and biology, and is equally at home with geography. Further Maths is highly recommended, especially for students intending to apply to top universities. Design Technology also shares common ground.

Second year of A Level 
  • Further mechanics and thermal physics fields
  • Nuclear physics 
Plus ONE option from the following:
  • Astrophysics
  • Medical physics
  • Engineering physics
  • Turning points in physics
  • Electronics 

Entry requirements

Triple Science students: 

B grade in Physics plus 

B grade in either Chemistry or Biology

B in maths

 

Double Science students:

BB in core and additional

B in maths

C in English

Assessment

Formal assessment will take the form of unit tests and internal assessments of investigating skills. Progress will be assessed internally through regular written and oral assignments, including end-of-topic tests and mock exams. 

Future opportunities

'A' Level physics is widely recognised as being a challenging subject, and is therefore looked upon very favourably by universities and employers.
As well as being essential for those wishing to study any aspect of physical science, physics 'A' Level will be of great use when progressing into engineering, design and mechanical areas; it will also be of equal use in medical-based courses such as radiography, radiotherapy, physiotherapy and medicine.
ICT, maths, astronomy, aerospace and other numerate subjects would also benefit from physics 'A' Level.
