Course description

AS YEAR 12The units covered are:Unit 1 - Understanding DanceUndertake a written paper lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions are based on the dancer as aperformer, the process and craft of choreography and the significance of dances. You will analyse professional works, learn anatomy and physiology, discover how to maximise your practical dance potential and gain a detailed understanding of the choreographic process. Unit 2 - Choreography and PerformanceYou will present a piece for performance. This must be a showcase of your technical skill andunderstanding, as well as a vehicle to show your expressive capabilities. Both you and your tutor have an input into the piece, which may be performed in a number of different dance styles. A2 YEAR 13The units covered are:Unit 3 - Contend and ContextUndertake a written paper lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions are essay style and candidates are assessed on a chosen dance genre and a set work. You will be asked to drawon your own dance experience and understanding and apply this in analytical form. Knowledgeof appreciation, constituent features and choreographic intention will be assessed, together with your understanding of dance history. Unit 4 - Group Choreography and Solo PerformanceYou are required to perform a solo piece demonstrating an understanding of a particular dancepractitioner. This piece will be devised by your and your tutor using professional work as a stimuli. You are also required to choreograph a group piece. The stimuli for this are set by the examination board.

Entry requirements

To study Dance at AS or A2 it is recommended that you have a minimum of Grade B in Dance atGCSE and at least a Grade C in English Language and English Literature
