Course description

Overview

A-level Maths is a challenging course which builds on the complex Algebra and Trigonometry covered at GCSE. Students develop rigour and fluency in abstract Maths and apply learned processes to problem solving. This is a highly esteemed A-level which is useful for many Higher Education courses.

Course content

AS Mathematics: The three examinations are equally weighted. Each paper is 1.5 hours. Core 1 and Core 2 develop Algebra, Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry and introduce Calculus, Logarithms and Exponentials. Mechanics 1 uses mathematical modelling to explore static, kinematic and dynamic problems.

Entry requirements

Attain at least a C grade in English Language/English Literature GCSE or Mathematics GCSE. Maths: B.

Assessment

Unit 1 - Core 1(MPC1) This is a non-calculator paper Algebra, co-ordinate geometry, differentiation, integration.

Unit 2 - Core 2 (MPC2) The above topics developed plus topics including functions, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and series.

Unit 3 - Mechanics 1 (MM1B) Forces, vectors, study of motion, connected particles, projectiles.
