Mathematics AS/A Level at Guildford College
Mathematics is not exactly a science or an art. It is a subject that can be studied for its own sake but its techniques can be applied in many other areas of study.
- C1: Algebra and functions (the generalisations of arithmetic), co-ordinate geometry (the mathematics of points, lines, curves and surfaces) in the (x, y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation and integration (the branch of mathematics involving derivatives and integrals).
- C2: As above plus trigonometry (the study of triangle measurements), exponentials and logarithms.
- S1: Background statistics, mathematical models, representing and analysing data, probability, correlation, regression, discrete random variables, the normal distribution.
5 GCSEs at C or above, including Maths at grade B.
Exams - 2 core units and 1 application unit.
Degrees in maths or mathematical sciences.
Careers in accountancy, finance management, computer modelling, systems analysis or communication engineering.
You will need a scientific calculator. If you do not already have one, your maths tutor can advise once you have started the course.
