Mathematics AS/A Level at Guildford College

Course description

Mathematics is not exactly a science or an art. It is a subject that can be studied for its own sake but its techniques can be applied in many other areas of study.

Course content

  • C1: Algebra and functions (the generalisations of arithmetic), co-ordinate geometry (the mathematics of points, lines, curves and surfaces) in the (x, y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation and integration (the branch of mathematics involving derivatives and integrals).
  • C2: As above plus trigonometry (the study of triangle measurements), exponentials and logarithms.
  • S1: Background statistics, mathematical models, representing and analysing data, probability, correlation, regression, discrete random variables, the normal distribution.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at C or above, including Maths at grade B.



Exams - 2 core units and 1 application unit.

Future opportunities

Degrees in maths or mathematical sciences.

Careers in accountancy, finance management, computer modelling, systems analysis or communication engineering.


Further information

You will need a scientific calculator. If you do not already have one, your maths tutor can advise once you have started the course.

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.
