Physics AS/A2 Level at Birchwood Community High School

Course description

A good grade in Physics A Level is a requirement for some university courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and other medically-related degrees. A Level Physics also provides a useful background to a wide variety of higher education courses; for example engineering, architecture, computing , mathematics, medical physics, astronomy, space science, electronic engineering, and even teacher training.

This course will encourage you to:

  • Develop an interest in and enthusiasm for Physics, including developing an interest in further study and careers in Physics.
  • Appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.
  • Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Physics and how they relate to each other.

A Level Physics

Module 5 – Newtonian world and astrophysics

Entry requirements

The OCR AS/A2 GCE Physics specification is a natural progression route for those learners who enjoyed Physics at GCSE, especially those taking Triple Science, gaining a B or above. A Maths GCSE grade B would also be preferable.

Assessment

AS Level Physics
Paper 01 – Breadth in Physics (1h 30m paper)

50% of the AS grade

Paper 02 – Depth in Physics (1h 30m paper)
50% of the AS grade

Both units test all of the AS modules

 

A-Level Physics

Paper 01 – Modelling Physics (2h 15m paper)

37% of the AS grade

Paper 02 – Exploring Physics (2h 15m paper)
37% of the AS grade

Paper 03 – Unified Physics (1h 30m paper)
26% of the AS grade

Practical Assessment
Not examined but passed/failed by teacher
