Cleaning and Environmental Services (Cleaning Services pathway) Level 2 Apprenticeship at Northumberland College

Course description

Cleaning & Support Services covers the following job roles: building interiors cleaner, hygiene operative, facilities operative, specialist cleaning operative, window cleaner and food premises cleaner. Apprentices could work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools, factories, state of the art offices and shopping centres.

Course content

You will learn a range of cleaning techniques and skills including health and safety, working effectively with customers and others, and communication skills. Depending on your employment role you will develop skills in either industrial or domestic cleaning.

Entry requirements

You should have two GCSEs at Grade D or above in English and Maths or a relevant Leve1 1 qualification and be employed in the industry.


Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments/ observations and written assignments.

Future opportunities

Progression from the course may be to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Cleaning Supervision, an Advanced Apprenticeship in Facilities Management, Qualifications in Team Leading, Progression to team leader and supervisor roles. Upon completion of the apprenticeship an employee can apply for membership of the professional organisation the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICS)
