Chemistry A level at Monks Walk School

Course description

Chemistry is about the very essence of life, the quality of life and its continuous improvement. A qualification in Chemistry can take you anywhere. From developing life-enhancing drugs to designing a new beer, from the law to the environment, from clothing to food, from health to manufacturing, from aviation to the City, Chemistry and chemical scientists make a major impact on, and play a vital role in, our daily life.

Course content

At A Level we study different aspects of Chemistry that are often in the media and that affect our lives including: Climate change, Green Chemistry, Pharmaceuticals and Nanotechnology.

The content of the A Level includes the fundamental concepts of Chemistry necessary for progression into higher education and employment, but allows students time to study the units in depth and provides a very practical experience for all students. This ensures that both the teaching and learning experiences are enjoyable.

Entry requirements

A*- B if the subject was taken as a separate science at GCSE. A*- B in Core Science and A*- A in Additional Science if Double Award studied. GCSE C or above in English and Maths. APS: 40 or above.

Future opportunities

Students considering careers in the environmental sciences, biochemistry, dentistry, pharmacy medicine and veterinary sciences are required to study Chemistry in order to qualify for higher level study.
