Course description

This Diploma is designed to give you a wide range of engineering skills and knowledge with the opportunity to specialise in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Year 2.

Course content

What you will study


In Year 1 you will study towards the 90 Credit Level 3 Diploma in Engineering which will give you a solid base for your later specialist studies. The units covered in Year 1 may include:

* Health & Safety
* Communications
* Mathematics
* Mechanical Principals and Applications
* Electrical and Electronic Principles
* Engineering Materials
* Engineering Drawing
* Electro Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems
* Principals and Application of Electronic Devices


Provided that you successfully complete the 90 Credit Diploma, you may progress to the Extended Diploma, choosing between Mechanical and Electrical/Eletronic Engineering. The units for the Electrical and Electronic option may include:

* Engineering Project (Double Unit)
* Business Operations in Engineering
* Further Maths
* Principles and Application of Analogue Electronics
* Application of Digital Systems
* Electronic Fault Finding
* Electrical Technology
* Further Electrical Principles

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other


Each unit is assessed by assignments and/or tests.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Full-time study at university to gain an Engineering degree or HND. Those in employment could progress to the HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Wakefield College.

Career opportunities

Completion of this course will enable you to apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship. You could also apply for a wide range of highly skilled jobs as a technician engineer in electrical or electronic engineering or in the manufacturing industry.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
