Physical Education at St Martin's School Brentwood
This course takes a multi-disciplinary: approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry drawn from a wide range of disciplines, with the focal point being the performer and performance. The course relies upon the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education and includes a study of topic areas including: Anatomy and Physiology, acquiring movement skills and Socio-cultural studies relating to participation in physical activity.
The first term focuses on the application of physiological and psychological knowledge to improve performance. It allows students to gain knowledge of motor, perceptual and cognitive skills and study information processing, which will enable candidates to evaluate critically both performance and the impact of different types of physical activity on the skeletal and muscular systems.
The second part of the year concentrates on motor control and how we learn skills. Studying Anatomy helps build a greater understanding of motion and movement. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are also studied. Within Contemporary Studies, students look at sporting issues in the UK, Australia and the USA.
In the second year, students study Exercise and Sport Physiology, Historical Studies and Sports Psychology and are asked to make constant reference to the health of participants. Historical study involves the knowledge and understanding of Physical Education as a field of study and its application on a specified time scale. Sports Psychology investigates the important role that the human mind has prior to, during, and after performance. Exercise and Sports Physiology focus on energy concepts and ergogenic aids.
