Course description

This qualification gives a broad introduction to, and is designed to support learners who are interested in learning about, the travel and tourism industry, with an emphasis on core knowledge and fundamental skills that are transferable across other sectors. 

Course content

Unit 1 – The World of Travel and Tourism

Travel & Tourism is one of the most vibrant, high profile and constantly changing industries in the world; it is regularly in the media and there are a wide variety of television programmes about the industry. This unit provides the foundation for you to study other units in travel and tourism. You will explore all aspects of the industry and how it is structured, its key components and its scale, roles of organisations and products / services offered, and how the organisations work together to benefit both themselves and their customers; you will also explore the factors that affect it today and the potential impact of them on the industry.


Unit 2 – Global Destinations

One of the main skills you need to work in the travel & tourism industry, is to have knowledge of geographical features & aspects of tourist destinations. This unit will develop your skills in using maps and atlases; you will investigate the features and appeal of global destinations and factors influencing visitor choice, including potential advantages and disadvantages of travel routes and transport options. You will learn how to use a variety of sources to prepare travel itineraries and recommend suitable destinations for different types of customers, and learn how to present information in an appropriate format.


Unit 3 – Managing the Customer Experience

Many Travel & Tourism organisations offer similar products/services, and providing quality customer service is needed to keep customers & attract new ones. The unit introduces you to customer service and the benefits it brings. You will investigate methods used in travel and tourism to monitor and improve customer service. You will develop practical customer service skills & demonstrate them while dealing with different customer service situations, and use feedback from a range of sources to evaluate your performance in those situations and produce an action plan to further develop your customer service skills.


Unit 15 – Visitor Attractions

Visitor attractions are an important part of the travel and tourism industry and as such are continuously evolving. In this unit you will look at the range and scale of both built and natural visitor attractions, their appeal and popularity. You will explore how visitor attractions are funded, the products & services offered by them, and how they respond to competition. You will look at how they develop and use technology in order to meet the needs of different types of visitors, and through the unit you will also develop the skills needed to carry out research, collate data and make decisions about the importance and effectiveness of visitor attractions.


Study Visits

The units you study are likely to provide opportunities to visit various travel and tourism organisations and visitor attractions (in groups and independently), as these are considered integral to the course, providing you with first-hand experience of the industry and enabling completion of coursework in realistic working environments.

Entry requirements

Grade 3/D in Maths.


Unit 1 – The World of Travel and Tourism - a written examination, 1.5 hours in length, set by Pearson.

Unit 2 – Global Destinations - a task set and marked by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions.

Unit 3 – Managing the Customer Experience - internally set assignment written and marked by your teachers.

Unit - 15 – Visitor Attractions - internally set assignment written and assessed by your teachers.

Financial information

Day trip costs vary depending on distances, modes of transportation and entrance fees, but typically could range from £7.00 to £30.00. 

Future opportunities

This course could lead onto further study and work in the Travel and Tourism sector such as in a tourism office, as a hotel manager, or as a holiday representative.

    • The College is situated on Moorgate in Rotherham, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Rotherham.  Buses leave the central Rotherham Interchange every 10 minutes and the journey takes approx. 5 minutes. 

      We also run dedicated bus services to ease your journey to and from College.  See for details and route information. 

      The College also has on-site permit parking for students, with priority given to students with the greatest distance to travel.
