Media Studies A Level at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

Do you have an interest in how mass media affects most areas of society and contributes to our understanding of the world? If so, then this could be the course for you.

Course content

Year 1 of the course is a self contained, integrated course providing a solid and rigorous introduction to the key aspects of media study. All students will have an opportunity to undertake practical media work as part of their programme. Year 2 of the course further investigates media research and production, as well as examining theoretical perspectives to understanding how the mass media operates.

Entry requirements

At least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths. GCSE Media grade 4 (grade C) or BTEC Media merit preferred. We look for interest, enthusiasm and engagement and students who are prepared to analyse and not just describe events.

Assessment

Tutors work closely with students to ensure they reach their full potential. The course is assessed by examination and coursework.

Future opportunities

Media Studies is a recognised qualification providing access to college and university study. It complements subjects such as English, Film Studies, Law, Psychology and Sociology.

It is especially useful for careers in Media and Publishing.
