Design & Technology (Food) AS & A Level at Presdales School
Food enables students to study nutrition, food science and design and making in the human context. Candidates will be given the opportunity to develop and solve problems related to food design and making. They will also gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of Food Technology.
Students are required to have studied Design and Technology at GCSE level and have achieved a grade B or above. They must be committed, self motivated and have a passion for design and the effect it has on society as a whole.
The AS course consists of 2 units:
- Unit 1: Based on specialist materials and components: students will study and work with a wide range of fabrics/food products and components.
- Unit 2: Coursework. This may take a number of forms: a single design and make project, two smaller projects and/or a portfolio of work.
The A2 course consists of 2 units which offer students the opportunity to further their knowledge and practical skills and understand the processes and procedures of commercial textile/food manufacture.
- Unit 3: Based on Design and Manufacture.
- Unit 4: Coursework. A single substantial designing and making project. Assessment
The AS and A2 units are assessed by a two hour written paper and a written or electronic design portfolio.
Design and Technology is an excellent stepping stone to a degree course at university or Art college. Further study could lead to a wide range of exciting careers including Product design, Graphic design, Fashion design, Theatre design, Architecture, Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Hospitality, Catering, Marketing, Retail Management, Media and Teaching.
