History AS/ A Level at Dixons City Academy

Course description

Students will study European and British History covering a range of people, events and developments.  They will continue to use primary and secondary sources in a critical way to investigate the past.  They will also be expected to develop skills of independent research, presentation, debating and structured writing.

Course content

Unit 1: Historical Themes in Breadth- Communism and democracy in the 20th Century- Maos China 1949-1976; Pursuing life and liberty: Equality in the USA, 1945-1968.

Unit 2: British History Depth Studies: Conflict and change in 19th and 20th Century Britain, Britain 1860-1930: The changing position of women and the suffrage question.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C including Grade B in History and preferably Grade B in English Language.

Assessment

Both units assessed through a 1 hour 20 minutes written exam

Future opportunities

Skills developed by studying History are highly valued by employers.  Students will develop the ability to communicate, analyse, evaluate and to make independent judgements.  People with A Level History often go on to careers such as journalism, law, media, teaching, social work, politics, conservation, heritage industry's and arts management, to name but a few.
