Course description

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) will give you an understanding of the performing arts with a specific focus on the essential skills, techniques and disciplines of the acting profession. The qualification provides you with an insight into the employment opportunities available, helping you to choose a career, or move on to further study.

The qualification builds on the student’s experiences of Drama or Performing Arts at KS4/GCSE with the majority focus on practical exploration of acting through exploring plays and student devised material. It is designed to develop students’ appreciation of drama and theatre through a range of practical experiences and analyses, creating opportunities to explore plays as an actor, director, designer and critic.

Students will further their knowledge and understanding of the language of drama and theatre as well as developing their performing skills.

Course content

This BTEC is a stimulating and varied programme of study which is assessed in the main through practical work. At the end of the two years students will have a qualification which is equivalent to three A levels. We believe this course will expose students to a fulfilling combination of practical and theoretical work. Over the two years students will have classes in the three main disciplines of theatre: acting, singing and movement.

All units are portfolio and practical based the course is 100% coursework there are no practical exams. The course combines both practical assignments and the study of a variety of performing arts disciplines, leading to a series of production projects with external audiences. You will usually be in a class of about 12 students and will work on group projects as well as individual assignments. You will be encouraged to learn a range of performance skills and techniques and you will be involved in all aspects of production from backstage to front-of-house. In the second year you will produce a final major project.

Entry requirements

4 A*- C grades at GCSE with a minimum of a D grade in English Language. Also a genuine interest in developing skills in the performing arts industry.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) has the equivalence of three GCE A Level and it is possible for you to progress further into higher education, as successful BTEC National qualifications give UCAS points for university applications.

A range of Higher Education courses linked to Drama or careers in acting, directing, design, musical theatre, stage management, producing, drama therapy, dramaturgy, drama teaching, drama journalism, community theatre and arts administration.
