Business AS/A Level at Exeter College
The focus of AQA AS Business is on small to medium-sized businesses operating within national markets. It covers the issues involved in a business start-up, such as research and planning, as well as the factors that determine success. It considers how established businesses might improve their effectiveness by making tactical decisions throughout the business. A Level Business builds on the AS units by considering more complex business scenarios and focusing on strategy.
The course will be taught by the use of small group work, self-directed research and presentation, class discussion and lectures. All units taught in year one are assessed across two papers at the end of the year.
During the first year students will study six units, including 'What is Business?', 'Managers, leadership and decision making', 'Decision making to improve marketing, operations, finance and human resources'. During the second year students will study strategic decision making which will build on the functional areas from year one.
You need at least five GCSEs at grade C or above (including English language and maths). You must enjoy reading and are expected to keep up to date with current business news.
Paper 1 is assessed through multiple choice questions, short answer questions and mini case study data response questions. Paper 2 is assessed by short answer questions and the use of a case study for data response questions. There is no course work option.
A Level Business Studies is an excellent preparation for Further and Higher Education courses in all business related areas and other academic courses in Higher Education. Business Studies is a useful qualification for those intending to progress into a wide variety of careers in business and management.
