Applied Science AS/A2 at Magdalen College School
You will: Gain a broad understanding of science and be able to study selected areas in more depth. Develop skills, knowledge and understanding of science. Have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way. Follow a programme of study that enables progression to both higher education and employment within the area of science. Develop key skills that are highly valued by employers and universities. Gain confidence through developing independent learning skills.
Summary of Units:
The Advanced GCE Award in Science comprises 6 units over 2 years:
P Compulsory Unit 1 - Investigating Science at work.
E Compulsory Unit 2 - Energy Transfer Systems.
P Compulsory Unit 3 - Finding out about substances.
P Compulsory Unit 7 - Carrying out Scientific Investigations.
P Optional - Additional Portfolio Module.
E Optional - Additional Portfolio Module.
P = Portfolio, E = Externally Assessed
This course would be suitable for:
- Students with an interest in Science who wish to gain a broad A level Science qualification covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Current Year 11 students who achieve at least grade CC in GCSE Double Science, C Maths and C English.
- Students with good study skills who would prefer a portfolio based course with fewer exams.
The study of Applied Science A Level allows students to follow a wide range of careers from medically based employment through jobs in sports Industry through to any environmentally based occupation.
Any GCE A Level subject or single/double award Applied A Level. One third of the course will be externally assessed. The remainder will be portfolio assessed. An Advanced GCE in Science is equivalent to an Advanced GCE and is graded from A to E.
