Engineering Subsidiary Diploma at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

The course is an ideal stepping stone for those who wish to progress to a HNC in Engineering.

Course content

To gain the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering qualification you must achieve a minimum of 60 credits of which 30 are from mandatory core units which consist of:

- Health & Safety
- Mechanical Principles and Electrical & Electronic Principles.

The remainder credits are achieved through optional modules which may include Mathematics, Materials and Drawing.

Entry requirements

You need a minimum of four GCSEs at GradeA/8 - C/4 including Mathematics & English Language. Mature students with appropriate life experiences will have their prior learning and skills taken into account.

All modules are assessed by assignments; each unit's assessment is matched to the content of the unit. Each unit can be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction levels, which are combined at the end of the qualification to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the qualification.

Future opportunities

It is possible to continue with level 3 studies to gain a Diploma in Engineering.

If you have appropriate industrial experience and other level 3 qualifications, there may be a route available onto a HNC.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.

      The College has free car parking facilities on-site.
