Dance at Cheam High School

Course description

If you can imagine how dance would portray human emotions and stories, this course is for you. Step inside the world of dance and gain knowledge and understanding of the dancer in action and the skills involved in performance. Through the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of dances you will gain an appreciation and understanding of their historical and cultural context. You will take your first steps in developing your own creativity as a dancer and choreographer. Not to mention keeping fit and trim.

Course content

AS Level
Component 1: Performance And Choreography

  • The process and craft of a solo choreography
  • Physical and interpretative Skills in relation to performances
  • Performance in a duet or trio


Component 2: Critical engagement

  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Rambert Dance Company
  • Investigating one area of study from – Romantic ballet period, The origins of American modern Dance,
  • American Jazz Dance or the contemporary dance scene in Britain

A Level
Component 1: Performance and Choreography

  • Solo performance linked to a practitioner
  • Performance in a quartet
  • The process and craft of group choreography


Component 2: Critical engagement

  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Rambert Dance Company
  • Appreciation of Rooster by Christopher Bruce
  • Investigating one area of study from; Romantic Ballet period, The origins of American modern Dance,
  • American Jazz Dance or the contemporary dance scene in Britain
  • Appreciation of one Dance work from: giselle,
  • Appalachian Spring, Singin’ in the Rain or Sutra

Entry requirements

GCSE grade C in english and Dance or a Dance background.
