Course description

AS outline

  • Component 01 – Computing Principles
    This component will cover the characteristics of contemporary systems architecture and other areas including: the characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices; software and software development; programming; exchanging data; data types, data structures and algorithms; legal, moral, ethical and cultural issues.
  • Component 02 – Algorithms and Problem Solving
    Elements of computational thinking; Problem solving and programming; Algorithms

A level outline

  • Component 01 – Computer systems
    This component will cover the characteristics of contemporary systems architecture and other areas including: the characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices; software and software development; exchanging data; data types, data structures and algorithms; legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues.
  • Component 02 – Algorithms and programming
    Elements of computational thinking; Problem solving and programming; Pattern recognition, abstraction and decomposition; Algorithm design and efficiency; Standard algorithms
  • Component 03 – Programming Project
    Students select a user-driven problem of an appropriate size and complexity to solve. Students will need to analyse the problem, design a solution, implement the solution and give a thorough evaluation.

Entry requirements

The chosen pathway requirements and at least a Grade B in GCSE Computer Science and a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics

Assessment

Assessment for Component 01: 1 hour 15 mins written paper, 50% of total AS marks, Component 02: 1 hour 15 mins written paper, 50% of total AS marks.

Assessment for Component 01: 2½ hours written paper, 40% of total A level, Component 02: 2½ hours written paper, 40% of total A level, Component 3: Programming project, 20% of total A Level. The project will be internally assessed and externally moderated.
