Course description

As a make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

- Professional make-up artistry settings working with performers
- Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
- Beauty and/or hair salons
- Make-up counters
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings

Course content

The programme consists of the following units:

Anatomy and physiology for make-up services
Airbrush make-up
Cosmetic make-up science
Media make-up
Style and fit postiche
Cosmetic camouflage
False eyelash application
Health and safety in the salon

Learners may also study GCSE or functional skills Maths and /or English as an important part of the course
Work experience of a minimum of 90 hours
Independent learning at home completing activities set by tutor

Entry requirements

Grade C/4 English language
Good attitude, keen, enthusiastic and motivated
Positive reference from school or previous college tutor
Pro-monitor will be checked if you are current student

Assessment

To be awarded this qualification, learners must successfully achieve the following assessments:
- Externally set and internally marked graded practical assessments (50% of qualification grade)
- Externally set and marked examinations (30% of qualification grade)
- Externally set and internally marked graded synoptic assessment (20% of qualification grade)
- Grading Mandatory units in this qualification are graded
- Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT).

As a make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

- Professional make-up artistry settings working with performers
- Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
- Beauty and/or hair salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings
- Product manufacturing and training

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 4 in one or more of the following areas:

- salon management
- specialist hair and scalp services

A kit and uniform. Cost to be confirmed.
