Course description

AS Level Specification

The specification means that all students will study the same two units for the first year whether they complete the AS Level or A2 Level. The Units taught in the first year are Law making and the legal system and The concept of liability.

Within the first unit of Law Making students will learn Parliamentary Law Making, Delegation legislation, statutory interpretation, judicial precedent, the civil courts and other forms of dispute resolution, the criminal courts and lay people, the legal profession, other sources of advice and funding and finally the judiciary.

The second unit covers the concept of liability. This includes; Underlying principles of Criminal Liability, The Courts: Procedure and Sentencing, Liability in Negligence, The Courts: Procedure and Damages, Formation of Contract, breach of contract and The Courts: Procedure and Damages.

A level specification

In A2, students will study Unit three which comprises of Criminal Law (Fatal and non-fatal offences against the person) or contract and Unit 4 which comprises of Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) or Law of Tort. Criminal law will cover murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, non fatal offences against persons, defences and evaluation. Contract law will cover, formation, contract terms vitiating factors, discharge of contract, remedies and evaluation.

Finally, unit 4 Criminal Law in unit three covers theft and robbery, burglary, blackmail, fraud, making off without payment, criminal damage and defences. Contract Law consists of negligence, occupiers liability, nuisance and escape of dangerous things, vicarious liability, defences and remedies

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE English Literature and Language.
