Animation, Games & Visual FX - Level 3 (Full-Time) at Newcastle College

Course description

This is a specialist course which will help you develop your skills in digital design. Diplomas are an alternate route into higher education or employment and boast a strong industry focus.

Course content

You will study:

  • Traditional Art & Design skills
  • Image Manipulation
  • Concept Art and Illustration
  • Games Design
  • Interface & Web Design
  • Storyboarding
  • 3D, 2D and Stop Motion Animation
  • Digital Video Production
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Contextual Influences 

Your course also includes GCSE or Functional Skills if needed in English and or Maths. Possessing these skills will help you to progress in education, training and employment and make a positive contribution in the community in which you live and work.

As well as GCSE & Functional Skills being embedded into all aspects of your course you will receive a dedicated lesson to enable you to develop your skills in the relevant subject area.

Entry requirements

You must have completed your compulsory school education and should have achieved at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs A-C
  • A BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design
  • An Intermediate GNVQ in Art and Design
  • An alternative equivalent qualification at the appropriate level

If English is not your first language you will also need an IELTS score of 5.5 or above. In addition to this, you will also need to bring with you to interview a portfolio of relevant project work.


You will put together a portfolio of work, evidencing the units of the qualification, which is internally assessed and externally moderated as the course progresses.
