- You are interested in human behaviour and methods used to investigate it.
- You are naturally curious and would like to know the reasons for our behaviour such as why we dream, why some people are aggressive and what causes phobias.
- You have a good science background.
- You may wish to consider studying AS Statistics which will help you understand and analyse data – a valuable skill for Psychology students.
You will learn how our behaviour is affected by our friends, family and other groups of people.
You will learn explanations on why we forget and why eyewitness testimony can be unreliable.
You will learn about mental illness including depression, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder.
You will learn about the central nervous system and also how different parts of the brain can affect our behaviour.
You will learn about a range of methods used to investigate human behaviour.
You will learn about physical attractiveness and what characteristics people look for.
You will learn about what the symptoms of these disorders are and what is thought to cause these severe conditions.
You will learn about explanations of offender behaviour and also methods of dealing with offending behaviour such as the effectiveness of prisons.
You must have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including at least a grade C in English Language.
All assessment for this course is through written examination.
Psychology students can go on to specialise in a particular area in Higher Education, such as Educational Psychology, Sports Psychology, Therapy or Occupational Psychology.
The skills you learn will also readily transfer to many other careers. These skills include oral and written communication, computer literacy, numeracy, problem-solving and the ability to carry out independent research. The study of Psychology is also good preparation for any career involving people. These include careers in education, health, marketing, management, human resources and government services, including the police.
