Maths and Further Maths A-Level at Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich

Course description

AS – Year 12: Consists of studying 3 modules over 1 year.

A2 – Year 13: Consists of studying 6 modules over 2 years.

Further AS – Consists of an additional 3 modules making a total of 9 over 2 years.

Further Mathematics – consists of studying an additional 3 modules making a total of 12

Topics studied within AS/A2 and Further Mathematics:

In Core Mathematics students will extend their knowledge of GCSE topics such as Algebra and Trigonometry as well as learning new topics such as Calculus.

In Mechanics students will learn how to describe mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them.

In Statistics students will learn a range of methods aimed at sampling, representing and interpreting sets of data.  Students will also study Probability and Hypothesis Testing.

In Decision Mathematics students will learn how to solve a range of problems involving networks.  A range of Algorithms will enable such problems to be solved.

All students are expected to purchase a graphics calculator, we recommend [Casio PLUS.]

Further Mathematics is only for students who have achieved an A* at GCSE.

If students intend studying AS Physics in Year 12 they should choose Mechanics 1.

Year 13 Content

Those students who pass the AS course (with an A - D grade at AS Level) will study A2 Mathematics:

Unit 9: Further Pure 2

Entry requirements

Students require a grade B or above in Maths GCSE, to take Maths AS Level.  However an A* grade is required to take Further Maths.  Students will also have an opportunity to sit an Algebra Test in March / April in preparation for Maths A Level.  If students gain a grade B Maths GCSE they will be expected to re-sit this test, after enrolment, if they want to study Maths.  A place on the course will be determined by the result of this test.  

Successful completion of AS Maths with a grade D or above is necessary to carry on to Year 13 Maths.


All of the units are examined by 1 hour 30 minute examination papers during the Summer Examination period.

Throughout the academic year students are formally assessed 6 times.  These ALIS Assessment Tasks will be based on mock and actual examination questions.

Future opportunities

A Level Mathematics is a much sought after and highly respected qualification, which can open doors to a wide range of Higher Education courses and rewarding careers.  Higher Education courses that require A Level Mathematics include Economics, Teaching, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture, Engineering, Science and Accountancy.
