Construction - Level 1 or 2 First Award in Construction - Step Up (for students aged 14-16) at Wakefield College

Course description

If you’re interested in a career in construction when you leave school but aren’t sure whether you wish to follow the craft route or the building services route, this course is ideal for you. If you choose to study the building services pathway, you’ll gain an introduction to both plumbing and electrical installation. If you choose the construction pathway, you’ll learn about bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, ground-works, electrical installation, and plumbing. These skills will be developed both in college workshops and projects outside College.

Construction Processes and Operations
Construction Drawing Techniques
Exploring Carpentry and Joinery Principles and Techniques
Exploring Brickwork and Blockwork Principles and Techniques
Exploring Painting and Decorating Principles and Techniques
Exploring Plumbing Principles and Techniques
Exploring Electrical Principles and Techniques

 

How you will learn

The course is a combination of practical and theory work with an short exam and you will learn through demonstrations, and activities in the classroom and workshop.

Entry requirements

Predicted grades A*-C (or grade 9 - 5) in 5 subjects at GCSE

AND

Minimum Entry Level 3 in English and Maths or equivalent

AND

A genuine interest in the subject/profession

AND

A good reference from Head of Year 10 or Headteacher

Assessment

Students will be assessed continuously throughout the two year course with a short exam at the end of Year 1. Your learning will be extended to outside of College with trips to local suppliers or construction sites and places of interest.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.


      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
