General Studies AS Level at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College

Course description

General Studies AS level is offered as one of the enrichment options that all students must take in Yr 12, in order to add breadth to their studies. It involves understanding and evaluating reasoning and arguments, assessing data and understanding the world in which we all live.

AQA Option B is an academic course that provides students with an opportunity to strengthen many of the skills they are already developing in other subjects, particularly in structuring essays, and the confident handling and analysis of data. With ties into every subject it really is an excellent enrichment subject to help broaden your understanding of the world around you.

  • Unit 1: Conflict (GENB1)
  • Unit 2: Space (GENB2)

Course content

Unit 1 centres around the issue of conflict. From a scientific point of view this could an understanding of why humans are aggressive, in regards to society appreciating why there are tensions between different people, in the Arts why there is often a conceptual misunderstanding of it and in Business how the competition between small and large businesses affects us.

Unit 2 covers the issue of space. In science terms this could be space exploration and the problems with the environment, in society the differences between urban and rural and how migration affects us all, how art is used in public spaces, how land is used in housing and businesses and how multiculturalism and green values are regarded by people at large.

Entry requirements



Units 1 and 2 are each assessed by a 1hour 30 minute exam. Unit 1 requires the candidate to write 3 extended answers. Unit 2 requires the candidate to answer a number of shorter questions relating to a data and sources sheet.

Each unit is worth 50% of the AS level.

Future opportunities

In Year 13 students may choose to complement their AS level qualification with a half A-level Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
