Course description

This course aims to develop the skills needed to pursue a career
within the construction industry.

This course is for students who:

  • are interesting in the construction or building industry
  • want to develop practical skills
  • enjoy producing quality products

Course content

Mandatory Units
Unit 1: Structure of the Construction Industry

  • The diversity and complexity of the construction industry
  • The contribution the construction industry makes to our  social and economic wellbeing
  • Human resources in the construction industry
  • Careers in the construction industry

Unit 2: Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction

  • The importance of health, safety and welfare in the construction and built environment sector
  • Risk assessments
  • The importance of control measures in risk assessment

Optional Units
4 Units will be completed from those show below
Unit 7: Construction Drawing Techniques

  • Producing construction drawings

Unit 8: Exploring Carpentry and Joinery

  • To mark out and form joints for a timber frame

Unit 9: Performing Joinery Operations

  • To produce a timber product

Unit 10: Performing Carpentry Operations

  • To perform carpentry tasks

Unit 11: Exploring Trowel Operations

  • To construct solid brick and block walling

Unit 13: Performing Brickwork Operations

  • To the setting out and construction of brickwork

Entry requirements

General Sixth Form


All units will be assess as follows:

Internally Assessed Coursework
Each unit is worth 16.6% of the final grade

Future opportunities


This course can lead to a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the
Built Environment, an apprenticeship or employment in the construction industry.
