AS Level Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity * The nucleus including particles, antiparticles and photons; hadrons and leptons; the quark model * Quantum phenomena - photoelectricity, energy levels and photon emission, wave particle duality * Electricity including electrical quantities, resistivity, circuits and components, alternating current Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves * Mechanics, including motion along a straight line, projectile motions, Newton's laws, energy and power * Properties of materials, including density and the Young modulus * Waves; refraction, diffraction and interference Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills * Designing experiments, processing data, making observations, analysing and evaluating results A2 Level Unit 4 - Fields and Further Mechanics * Momentum, circular motion and simple harmonic motion * Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, capacitors, electromagnetic induction Unit 5 Section A: Nuclear and Thermal Physics * Probing the nucleus, radioactivity, thermal properties of materials, ideal gases and kinetic theory Section B: Option Units * Candidates choose one option from: * Astrophysics: lenses and telescopes, classification of stars, cosmology * Medical Physics: physics of the eye, ear, biological measurements, imaging * Applied Physics: rotational dynamics, thermodynamics, engines * Turning points in physics: the discovery of the electron, wave-particle duality, special relativity Unit 6 - Investigative and Practical Skills * Designing experiments, processing data, making observations, analysing and evaluating results
