At AS level you will cover the following topics:
 
Unit 1
Demography, Family & Society, Environmental Issues, Key issues for Society - Poverty, Employment, Leisure, Housing, The Welfare State, Health Problems, The Health of the Nation Initiative
 
Unit 2
Food Provision, Food preparation, food safety and hygiene, Management of resources & financial awareness, Food preparation equipment, Selection and purchase of food and household goods Consumer rights.
 
At A2 level you will complete a coursework portfolio and cover the following topics in Unit 4: Nutrition, Nutrition and energy, Dietary needs of different groups, Developments in the Food industry

Course content

Learning Method:
 
A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used to appeal to all types of preferred learning styles. Theory work and practical food preparation will be carried out. Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for research, asked to give presentations to the group and to take part in discussions. You will be required to provide ingredients for practical lessons on a regular basis.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.

Future opportunities

The specification is aimed at preparing students for careers or higher education in Nutrition, Food Science, Sports Science, Food Technology and Consumer Protection. The subject develops awareness of many major issues in today’s society. It carries full UCAS points at AS and A2 levels.
