Health and Social Care - BTEC Subsidiary Diploma at Bedlingtonshire Community High School

Course description

This is a two year course working at Level 3 which is equivalent to one A Level. The qualification equips you with a broad understanding of the essential knowledge and skills needed to help you begin or progress in a wide variety Health and Social Care professions. The course consists of three compulsory core units plus three specialist units.

The main areas which you will study in the core units are:

  • Effective communication in Health and Social Care
  • Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Health, Safety and Security

In addition the three optional units will cover a wide range of topics and give greater depth in certain areas. The choice is extensive and may include:

  • Human Development
  • Caring for children and young people
  • Health Education
  • Psychological perspectives in health and social care

Entry requirements

  • You will need to be motivated to work hard and progress on a steady basis. Completing six units means that you can’t just leave work until later in the course
  • You will need good written communication skills as all of the assessment evidence will be portfolio based
  • You will need to be organised and able to research information independently
  • You must be willing to go outside the classroom to work in new situations and environments
  • You will be expected to be aware of current affairs by reading around the subject
