Philosophy and Ethics at Outwood Academy Valley

Course description

Philosophy is a subject which has existed for nearly 2600 years and the question 'What is Philosophy?' is a notoriously difficult one to answer. It can be defined as a method of discovering truth through the use of rational argument and logical analysis. Within the course we look at ethics, which deals with which actions are good and bad and discover reasons why people believe this. We critically analyse these views and express our own opinions.
The course encourages a huge amount of self-reflection and actively engages students in their perceptions of what they view as right or wrong, to question their views and to perhaps come up with new conclusions. Students have expressed a huge amount of positivity in their choice of the subject as they claim that each lesson allows them to look at something in a way they never knew before. We also have an annual trip, last year visiting Rome.
