Applied Science BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate at Heysham High School Sports College

Course description

BTEC National Extended Certificate.

Students learn through application, and a range of assessment including examinations, coursework and a controlled assessment. 

This is a vocational or work-related qualification, so students will have the opportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills.

The entire course covers the fundamentals of science and practical scientific techniques as well as specialist units. 

Course content

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of applied science

Externally assessed

This unit will be assessed through a 90-minute written exam worth 90 marks, which is set and marked by Pearson.

The paper is split into three sections, each worth 30 marks:

  • Section A – Biology
  • Section B – Chemistry
  • Section C – Physics.

Unit 2: Practical Scientific procedure

Coursework Unit, Internally assessed

 

Unit 3: Scientific Investigative skills (120GLH) Controlled assessment Unit.

Externally assessed

Practical task which is a pre-released task,. Students have a 3 week period to complete this in two parts.

  • Astronomy and Space Science 

Entry requirements

Students must achieve a grade C in English

Language and GCSE science or a Merit at BTEC Applied Science Level 2. 

Assessment

4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external.

  • Mandatory content (83%).
  • External assessment (58%).
  • Coursework (42%)

Financial information

Folders and other stationery are needed to ensure work is organised. All texts which are studied for the course are provided. Access to the internet at home or at school is essential.

Future opportunities

This course can provide a route to employment within the fields of science,

technology, engineering and maths. Applied sciences can offer a wide variety of careers, such as forensic scientist, drug researcher, medical physics technician, science technician and many more.
