Food Science and Nutrition at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)

Course description

This is an exciting new course which will allow you to gain a wealth of knowledge about Food Science and Nutrition. You have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food, as well as developing practical skills linked to experimental work and the cooking and preparation of food.

Course content

Award -Unit 1 Planning to meet nutritional needs Looking at the structure and how the body uses nutrients and factors affecting nutritional needs of different groups. Applying knowledge to plan a diet for a specific individual – including practical work Certificate – Unit 1 & Developing practical food production skills A practical unit to develop advanced food preparation skills to restaurant standard – Think Master Chef! Diploma – Unit 1, 2 & Experimenting to solve food production problems - a scientific approach. Carrying out experiments with food, to propose solutions to food production problems.

Entry requirements

Normal entry requirements are a Grade C at Catering or Pass level at Home Cooking Skills


Year 12: Award and Certificate level - Assessment is through controlled conditions Assignment Year 13: Diploma level – Controlled conditions Assignment

Future opportunities

Higher education courses e.g. BSc Food and Nutrition, BSc Human Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Public Health Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology. Employment within the food and drink sectors of: • Hospitality and catering • Food production • Food retail. A study of nutrition Care workers to support their service users or as a Fitness trainer or Food Technology Teacher
